The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a general English language proficiency test.
The CELPIP test allows test takers to demonstrate their ability to function in English. The test clearly, accurately, and precisely assess a test taker’s English abilities in a variety of everyday situations, such as communicating with co-workers and superiors in the workplace, interacting with friends, understanding newscasts, interpreting and responding to written materials.
There are two types of CELPIP tests to choose from, i.e. CELPIP General and CELPIP General LS.
CELPIP General
Evaluates test taker’s English speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills and is used for permanent residence applications and professional designations.
Single 3-Hour Test Sitting
- Takes approximately 3 hours to complete and can be done in one sitting with no separate speaking session.
- IRCC Approved for PR Status.
- The CELPIP general test is IRCC approved test for permanent residency applications.
Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.
1. Reading
Time Allotted: 55-60 minutes
Reading will comprise of 4 components and 1 practice component.
Practice component: 1 question
- Part 1: Reading correspondence. 11 Questions.
- Part 2: Reading to apply a diagram. 8 Questions.
- Part 3: Reading for Information. 9 Questions.
- Part 4. Reading for viewpoints. 10 Questions.
2. Listening
Time Allotted: 47-55 minutes
Listening will comprise of 6 components and 1 practice component.
Practice component: 1 Question?
- Part 1: Listening to problem solving. 8 Questions.
- Part 2: Listening to daily life conversation. 5 Questions.
- Part 3: Listening for information. 6 Questions.
- Part 4: Listening to a News item. 5 Questions.
- Part 5: Listening to a Discussion. 8 Questions.
- Part 6: Listening to viewpoints. 6 Questions.
3. Writing
Time Allotted: 53-60 minutes
Writing comprises of 2 tasks.
- Task 1: Writing an email
- Task 2: Responding to a survey question
4. Speaking
Time Allotted: 15-20 minutes
Listening comprises of 8 tasks and 1 practice task.
- Task 1: Giving advice.
- Task 2: Talking about personal experience.
- Task 3: Describing a scene.
- Task 4: Making predictions.
- Task 5: Comparing and persuading.
- Task 6: Dealing with a difficult situation.
- Task 7: Expressing opinions.
- Task 8: Describing an unusual situation.
CELPIP General LS
Evaluates test taker’s English speaking and listening skills to evaluate whether they are capable of communicating in English and is used for permanent residence, citizenship applications and professional designations.
Single 1-Hour Test Sitting
- Takes approximately 1 hour to complete and can be done in one sitting with no separate speaking session.
- IRCC Approved for Citizenship Status.
- The CELPIP-LS test is the IRCC approved test for Canadian citizenship applications.
